The climb begins at Marangu Gate inside Mount Kilimanjaro after registration with park authorities. The trail ascends through lush rainforest filled with tall eucalyptus trees, thick vegetation, and rich biodiversity.
This zone is home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The trail is humid and often muddy, creating a true jungle trekking experience.
Arrival at Mandara Huts marks the first overnight stop on the mountain.

The trail continues through the final rainforest section before opening into heath and moorland zones. The landscape becomes wider and more dramatic with clear views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo summit.
The air becomes thinner as altitude increases, requiring a steady and controlled pace.
Arrival at Horombo Huts offers panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding plains.

Habitat: Moorland
This day is dedicated to acclimatization on Mount Kilimanjaro. Climbers remain at Horombo Huts to allow their bodies to adjust to higher altitude conditions.
Optional hikes include Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks, offering wide views of volcanic landscapes and both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
This rest day improves summit success rates significantly.

The trail enters the harsh alpine desert zone between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes rocky, dry, and volcanic with minimal vegetation.
This is a physically demanding section as oxygen levels decrease and temperatures drop significantly.
Arrival at Kibo Huts marks the final base camp before summit night.

The summit climb begins around midnight under cold and dark conditions. Climbers ascend slowly toward Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
Reaching the summit offers sunrise views over glaciers, volcanic craters, and the vast Tanzanian landscape. After celebration and photos, descent begins back to Kibo Huts and continues to Horombo Huts.
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.

The final descent passes through lush rainforest on Mount Kilimanjaro toward Marangu Gate. The trail becomes easier as oxygen levels increase and forest life becomes more vibrant.
At Marangu Gate, climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring back to Arusha for rest and celebration.
